Alex Garcia (SVSU Head Coach) and Grant MacKenzie (HFCC Head Coach) creatively decided to start an on-going tradition to motivate student-athletes between the two NCWA programs by purchasing a trophy and allowing the winning team to take it home after each contest between SVSU and HFCC.
This trophy is symbolic of the two schools mascot: SVSU "Cardinals" and HFCC "Hawks".
"Every time we step on the mat we want our "HAWK PRIDE" to shine through. It's nice to have a friendly tradition with the "Cardinals" (SVSU)." said Grant MacKenzie. "When I first told the wrestlers about the trophy, I saw a fire light up inside their eyes. They were hungry to win that trophy!".
On January 19, the HFCC wrestling club made school history for winning their first dual meet by defeating Saginaw Valley State University impressively; 41-4.
The trophy will remain at Henry Ford Community College until SVSU can win it back.
