Why do I coach?
I coach because I fell in love with this sport in 9th grade and it instantly became important to me. It defined who I was in high school and still does today--A wrestler.
I learned quickly that I was different and felt at ease around other wrestlers--community.
Wrestling is difficult. Weight management is difficult. Losing in front of a crowd is difficult. Practices were grueling. But, I enjoyed it.
For some reason, I can't stay away from the mat for too long because I start to miss it. The wrestling mat has always been like a magnet that brings me back every season as well as the athletes who make the time commitment worthwhile.
I coach to help young people avoid mistakes and guide them through each season (and life) successfully. I choose to mentor young men who are in essence a younger version of me who need support, supervision and a role-model.
Starting a team at Henry Ford College is very personal because it did not exist when I graduated from high school in 1992. HFCC was the first College I looked at attending, but chose Olivet because it had a team I could join. I wanted to be part of a wrestling family. I wanted to be a student-athlete. I wanted a second chance.
I coach to give others an opportunity that wasn't there for me at an affordable school outside of Detroit.
